Position Wanted for Paul McKean’s step-son, Fred Merrill: Following receipt of an AA degree in Photography Fred was employed by a small custom furniture manufacturing company in Columbia for 23 years. The current recession put the company out-of-business. Fred was employed as a "schlepper" - that is he and another man delivered the completed furniture to the purchaser and installed it in place. He was unable to advance beyond this level because he is afflicted with Asberger's (spell?) Syndrome which is a very slight form of Autism. It mainly exhibits itself as an inability to understand math beyond the basic addition, subtraction, division, multiplication level; a slight speech impediment; a short attention span, and a tendency to talk too much. That's annoying at times, but on the other hand he's extremely reliable, conscientious, very strong, healthy, friendly, willing to take direction, makes friends easily, totally honest, and doesn't drink, smoke or use drugs. Despite his handicap, Fred has become an extremely competent artist and imaginative photographer (his world-wide underwater photos are as good or better than any I have ever seen). The newspapers have done articles on his scrap wood sculptures this past year, and a Baltimore museum will exhibit some of his artwork later this year. Unfortunately, his affliction prevents him from having the ability to sell himself or his work so it remains just a fulfilling hobby. (posted 02/15/09)
