Dave Ward Memorial Scholarship Application

INTRODUCTION AND INSTRUCTIONS

PURPOSE

The purpose of the Dave Ward Memorial Scholarship (DWMS) is to provide limited financial assistance to students in advanced education (post high school) and to encourage citizenship studies in pursuit of that education. An essay devoted to citizenship will be the method used to encourage active citizenship. The 2009 award amount is $1000.

ELIGIBILITY

Any Maryland student, currently in, or entering, grades 11 or 12, may apply for the DWMS. An eligible student will complete an application as described below. All listed questions and information must be supplied. Proper grammar and good writing skills are expected. The applicant will certify that the application is their own original work and any evidence to the contrary will eliminate the applicants from the selection.

APPLICATION

The application will take the general form below. Due to mistakes in the previously posted application form, the application deadline has been extended to July 15, 2009. The applications will be reviewed and finalists contacted in early August. Applicants will make contact with and attend a Monumental meeting as described below during the months of August or September. This schedule may be modified as needed and acceptable to both Monumental and the applicant, provided that an award can be made for the upcoming school term.

SELECTION

All applications will be reviewed by the Monumental DWMS committee. Other members or outside individuals, who may be uniquely suited to review the applications, may be called upon by the Monumental committee. The application as a whole will be used to judge the suitability and the desirability of the applicant. The written essay will count for the majority of the judgment criteria, but it will be augmented by other supporting information in the application.

One or more "finalists" in the selection process will be asked to attend a regularly scheduled Monumental meeting to speak to the members and present their essay. Final selection will be made thereafter and the award will be announced as far as possible in advance of the start of the pertinent school year.

AWARDING

A certificate of award may be delivered to the applicant by mail or, if possible, in person at a Monumental meeting. The cash value of the award will be stated but delivery of the actual funds will be delayed until further information is supplied. The awardee will supply the DWMS committee with a copy of a letter of acceptance or other suitable evidence that the student will be attending an institution of higher learning within the next 90 days. At that time, the funds will be delivered to the student or his guardian if still a minor, for their direct use in any cost related to their continued education.
